How to link to an external PDF, Word document or other document

You can use Flair to link to an external PDF, Word document or other document as long as the viewer has the required software on their computer to open the document (for example they would need Microsoft Word to open a Word document).

PDFs can generally be opened by most people.

Just set the document you wish to open in the HTML portion of the Object Settings>Mouse Events tab. And make sure that the document is in the correct location (the location that you specify).

Please note that when in preview mode in Flair the document will not open when you click on it. You need to play the output HTML file or an output projector file (.exe) to see it work.

Here is a sample.

You can download the sample project files here.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  • This project works locally on your computer or on the Web.
  • The way this project is set up, the PDF file must be in the same location as the output.swf file. You can of course place the PDF anywhere you want.
  • You just have to make sure that the path you select is correct for either the web or local use. If the path is wrong, the PDF will not load.
  • Make sure to select "Always" as the option under "Script Access" in the Export Settings window, HTML tab.
  • This same method works with other web friendly file formats such as word documents.
